Enjoy Your Time in Hammersmith, W6

The district of Hammersmith is part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and the W6 postcode district. Fulham is to the south of the district, Shepherds Bush is north, Kensington is to the east and Chiswick is located to the west.

The first parish church in the area opened in the 1660s. The church, which later became known as St Paul’s, was the location of a monument to Sir Nicholas Crispe who built it, and a bust of King Charles I made of bronze. Even though the church was rebuilt in 1883, the bust and monument were transferred to the new one.

Among the more notable bridges of the area is the Hammersmith Suspension Bridge, designed and built in 1827. It was later rebuilt in 1893. There have been two improvement projects in 1984 and one in 1997-2000.

The Ark is one of the notable landmark buildings of the area. It has the hull-like appearance, and hence the name. Construction of this office development began in 1989 and was finished by 1992. Since then, the building has been occupied by a number of companies, including Seagram and Vivendi Universal.

Among the Grade II listed buildings of Hammersmith is 22 St Peter’s Square. The building currently serves the purpose of office and architects’ studio. The former Island Records, also known as The Fallout Shelter, is located in the basement, rear side of the building.

The centre of the area features two stations on the London Underground, both named Hammersmith tube station. One of them is on the District and Piccadilly lines, while the other one is on the Circle and Hammersmith & City lines.
